Are iPhones good enough to be labeled as the “Latest Digital Camera?”

Off late I have been seeing a strange shift in the behavior of travel enthusiasts or vacationers. I returned from a recent vacation and I just could not believe what I observed. The number of iPhones used in comparison of DSLRs or point and shoot actually shocked me.

There were only a couple of DSLRs including mine and a handful of point and shoot which were easily countable. Most of the travelers out there were shooting on an iPhone 6 or 6s.

I could not stop myself to ask them the reason behind Pro Photographers using iPhone. In a casual discussion with few of them, I found most of the user’s opinions were almost alike. The reason they used to prefer iPhone over DSLR or point and shoot is that they are already carrying a phone which has a powerful inbuilt camera facility. With a few downloads of photo apps, their iPhone behaves no lesser than a good DSLR. Their views were, the only area where an iPhone lags behind is the higher resolution which a DSLR offers. But for a casual photography, iPhone is the best companion for them

Photo sharing is a feature everyone adores. Where point and shoot cameras lacks in this aspect, iPhone 6 scores over. Even few of them believed that iPhone gives all the features which a fewer expensive camera models provide.
Now the picture was clear. I understood why Apple has started giving the camera manufacturers a run for their money. With additional features of HDR, larger sensors, 12MP camera and 4k video, people are converging towards iPhones. Be it any sport or social event, a vacation on an outdoor shoot, iPhones are getting popular everywhere.

When Sony AR7ii outpaced iPhone 6s!

Many photographers believe that the camera capabilities of iPhone are commendable though, but cannot be beaten by a powerful DSLR’s or a Point and shoot. Especially after the recent launch of Sony AR7ii and its 4K video capabilities, the results have been incomparable. Sony AR7ii results were much better. Another thing is, when compared to clicking in low light or capturing shallow depths of field, the professional cameras are supreme.

“ Well, selling a large number of a particular item of a store doesn’t guarantee that the whole store is number 1 compared to other stores. “
The point is not about comparison of iPhone vs DSLR. The point is that when the features for which the Pro photographers have been waiting for so long, and even are ready to pay a huge amount to the leading Camera manufacturing companies like Nikon, Sony, Kodak, Canon, etc., then the Apple iPhone brought all those features within their compact iPhone and that too in a much reasonable price!

What about the Backup and Recovery measures?

Let us now have a look on how these too devices perform when compared to backup and recovery methods.

For DSLR’s or any other Camera

We all know that to avoid accidental deletion or loss of Photos, it is always a good to keep a backup of everything. In case of cameras, whatever is recorded is stored on a memory card or SD card. It is advisable to copy the data from the SD card to PC or other storage devices to avoid data loss. However in case such a mishap, there is no better way than to use a Photo Recovery Software to recover all the Photos back on your device.

For iPhone

iCloud provides 5GB of free data storage for all apple devices. However, the storage quota can be extended with yearly up gradation charges. iCloud can be configured in the settings app on iPhone. Also individual types of files can be configured for backup like Contacts, Calendars, Photos etc.
For example, one can install a dropbox account, and turn on the camera upload feature from Dropbox’ Settings. Photos will be synced to your Dropbox whenever iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
Another method is to back up the files with iTunes. Once registered with the desktop, one can set up iTunes backup. A backup should begin automatically when you plug your device in and iTunes opens. If not, right-click the device in the left pane and select “Back Up” to manually begin one
For iPhones there are third party tools through which you can recover your iPhone Data. Just in case you missed on your backup routine, a third party software can be the solution.

As a concluding note, surely, when it comes to pro professional or expert photography, iPhone may not compete too far, but for those amateurs or casual photographers, iPhone is surely a winner.
