How to Recover Photos/Videos from Lost.Dir on SD card

Lost.Dir folder is very much common to our eyes. Anyone who handles an Android Phone must have seen the folder on his/her device. But fewer of us may know the actual importance of that folder.  Whenever you face a photo/video loss issue on your android device, the files go to a temporary folder named Lost.Dir, just like Recycle bin in windows. The folder is seen in any android device and mostly is empty.If you want, you can retrieve your lost files from this temporary bin, but it is not as easy as it sounds. The reason being the files are in an encrypted format and it is not at all readable without the help of any special technique.

So, in order to retrieve your photos/videos from Lost.Dir folder, you need to deploy a third party recovery software.

Suppose you have recently lost your kid’s most cherished photos from your Android’s phone external SD card due to accidental deletion or maybe some kind of card corruption. The first thing to look into is the Lost.Dir folder of your device. It is very much likely that the lost files have gone to your Lost.Dir folder. There is an another very effective way.

  • Install and open ES file explorer go to extsdcard
  • Open LOST.DIR
  • Long press on any file then click select all
  • Click on “Rename” option in the bottom of the screen
    Here you will find: Batch Rename
    Input a new name: e.g: Photo, Picture etc
    Start number: write 1 or 01
    Rename extension name: write jpg
    Click ok
    (check the attached image)
    and you’ll recover all your images.

  1. Abrupt pulling out or ejection of SD card from Android phone.
  2. Sudden interruptions or power failure while transferring files on Android phone.
  3. Android phone operating system suddenly not booting up.
  4. Improper shutting down while read-write process is in the mid-way.

    In my case, formatting the SD card helped. I was just losing my files whenever I was trying to add new files onto the SD card. After I formatted the SD card on camera, everything fell into places.

      lost.dir is formed, whenever there is any issues/problems on the card. It is however not possible to state any particular cause since there can be many reasons for this

    can we recover deleted image through ES Explorer?

      ES File Explorer has recycle bin to restore accidentally deleted files. Check to see whether the option is enabled or not. By default, the option is enabled. You can recover your deleted images from Recycle bin.
